Gweru City Council has acquired a new tipper truck to be used for construction works, especially road rehabilitation around the city.

The truck was bought at a cost of US$102 660.

It comes at a time when Gweru City Council was spending thousands of dollars hiring tipper trucks.

Speaking to Business Times on the side-lines of the commissioning of the truck last week, Gweru City Council spokesperson, Vimbai Chingwaramusee said:

“We could not operate properly without a tipper, particularly looking at the issues of road rehabilitation. Road rehabilitation could not be conducted without a tipper truck so that is why the council acquired one.”

Chingwaramusee said the authority had no truck to carry gravel and any other material needed for road rehabilitation as the other fleet was down thus negatively impacting the city’s road rehabilitation.

“For us to be a sustainable prosperous city of choice by 2030 we need to have a tipper truck to ensure that our roads are trafficable. The truck will help in the carrying of gravel and various materials for fixing roads,” she said.

Chingwaramusee said the delivery of their own tipper truck will ease costs on the council as it relied on hiring trucks.

“We have been hiring so it has been a big challenge for the local authority and now that we have one tipper truck at least it’s going to be much better and we will save some money” she said.

The truck was purchased last year in July but delayed to be delivered due to the unstable exchange rates.
