Mutapa CEO steps down

Mutapa Gold Resources (MGR) chief executive officer Trevor Barnard has stepped down, with the mining group appointing Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya as his substantive successor, Business Times can report.

Maseva-Shayawabaya takes over the reins with effect from May 1, 2026, marking a leadership transition at the gold-focused entity that emerged from the restructuring of Kuvimba Mining House (KMH) into MGR.

Barnard, who previously led KMH before its reorganisation, assumed the top job in 2024 following the departure of Simba Chinyemba, who left to take up a position as chief investment officer at Mutapa Investment Fund.

Confirming the development, MGR board chairman Charles Chikaura said the company had accepted Barnard’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his contribution during a period of strategic transition.

“The board of directors wishes to inform stakeholders that Trevor Miles Barnard has tendered his resignation as Chief Executive Officer of Mutapa Gold Resources (MGR), effective May 1, 2026,” Chikaura said.

“On behalf of the board, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Trevor for his dedicated service and leadership during his tenure.

“Trevor, who was previously Kuvimba Mining House (KMH) CEO, played a significant role in strengthening KMH as well as MGR’s strategic direction, driving growth and overseeing key projects, and we are grateful for these contributions. The board wishes Trevor every success in his future endeavours.”

Chikaura said the board had moved to ensure continuity by appointing Maseva-Shayawabaya, who brings both operational and financial experience within the group.

“The company has appointed Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya as the substantive Chief Executive Officer to take over the reins from Trevor,” he said.

“Patrick was previously the KMH Head of Gold Cluster and Chief Finance Officer of MGR. He is well-suited to take the company forward. We wish Patrick well in this role and we offer him all the support that he requires to take MGR forward.”
