‘Abuse of office killing Zim’s health sector’

The country’s anti-graft body, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) says abuse of office and rampant corruption are compromising the public health sector.

The anti-graft body said there was also political interference in the health care sector in Zimbabwe with politicians cited as a major source of the problem in the proper systems of health care in the country.

Zacc research manager, Onesmus Nyaude, who presented findings of a case study report said there was rampant abuse of public health care systems in Zimbabwe.

“The manifestation dynamics in public hospitals revealed that, abuse of public office is at 52%, concealment 20%, embezzlement 15%, extortion and bribery 10%,” read the research findings.”

 “Therefore, if not curbed, maladministration in public hospitals has great potential of compromising quality monitoring and evaluation standards of healthcare service delivery programs.”

The report further revealed that poor administration of the country’s health sector is being worsened by clandestine appointment of hospital executives, bad corporate governance, and minister’s excessive powers.

According to the latest Corruption Perception Index by the Transparency International, Zimbabwe is ranked 160 out of 180 countries, highlighting that about US$1bn was lost annually through corruption.
