The Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) has appointed Dennis Mtombeni as chief executive officer-designate with effect from June 1, 2026, following the resignation of Dr Douglas Zimbango, Business Times can report.
Dr Zimbango exits after leading the State-owned diamond miner through a difficult period marked by weak global diamond prices and operational challenges that weighed heavily on profitability.
In a statement, the ZCDC Board said Dr Zimbango would officially leave office on June 30, 2026.
“ZCDC hereby announces the stepping down of Dr Douglas Zimbango from his position as Chief Executive Officer with effect from June 30, 2026,” reads part of the statement.
Dr Zimbango joined ZCDC as a non-executive director in 2022 before being seconded to lead the executive team in January 2024.
The board credited him for providing “steady and diligent leadership” during a challenging period for the diamond industry.
The company also confirmed the appointment of Mtombeni as part of its succession planning framework.
“In line with its structured succession planning process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Dennis Mtombeni as Chief Executive Officer-designate, effective June 1, 2026,” the statement said.
The board thanked Dr Zimbango for his contribution to the company and said a month-long transition process would be undertaken to ensure continuity.
“During the month of June 2026, Mr Mtombeni will work closely with Dr Zimbango to ensure a seamless leadership transition. He will assume full responsibilities as chief executive officer with effect from July 1, 2026,” reads the statement.
Mtombeni is a seasoned mining executive with more than two decades of industry experience. He joined ZCDC in 2017 and has held several senior roles within the organisation, including Mine Manager, General Manager Operations and Acting Chief Operating Officer since 2024.
He previously served as Mine Manager at River Ranch Diamonds and Pickstone-Peerless Gold Mine.
