Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has been arrested and is being held in custody at Rhodesville Police Station.
Mafume’s lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara confirmed to the Business Times that Mafume handed himself over to Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) yesterday afternoon and is facing charges of abuse of office.
“He has been arrested after he presented himself at the ZACC offices and they subsequently charged him with criminal abuse of office which charges he is denying,” Bhatasara said.
“We recorded a warned and caution statement in which he denied the charges and he is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow (today).
Mafume was inaugurated three months ago replacing Herbert Gomba who had been recalled by the MDC-T together with five other councillors.
