The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has advised motorists to exercise extreme caution on the country’s roads to avoid accidents as the festive season mood begins.

TSCZ managing director, Munesushe Munodawafa, said the motorists should respect basic rules of the road saying his organisation would soon embark on an awareness campaign to drive the message home ahead of the festive season.

“The trauma that one goes through after an accident, whether you are a survivor whether you were wrong or right, it’s such that you don’t want to experience it.

We will continue to educate the public on road safety through awareness campaigns,” Munodawafa said.

The secretary for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Paul Nyoni weighed in saying: “ As Bulawayo Metropolitan Province we are committed to working together to identify areas where we can do more to address the problem of road safety. Over the next decade, we call for accelerated actions on road safety to save lives.

“We hope to see ourselves committing to improving safety for all road users – not just drivers and passengers but pedestrians, cyclists, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities – by taking a safe system approach.”

Hundreds of lives are lost through road traffic accidents during holidays, with the bulk of them attributed to human error.
