Summer vs winter fragrances

…The one that explodes can take you to a place in time

PATIENCE MUSA

Some people are known for their iconic signature scents.

It’s irresistible!

But, with the prices of iconic fragrances beyond the reach of many, who can truly afford to dedicate perfumes to a particular season?

After all, some say, a beautiful scent is a beautiful scent right 365 days a year?

Not so apparently.

We change a lot of things in winter, the type of skin moisturiser to a thicker one, we change the way we dress and opt for warmer clothing so why shouldn’t our fragrance change too?

Fragrances can alter your mood significantly, trigger memories and take you to a place in time and it has been known to enhance individuality.Surely there are some people you remember by their fragrance or people you are drawn closer to because they just smell great!

There is a science to this.

Fragrances are influenced by temperature.

When its summer, the heat causes the fragrance to evaporate faster and at the same time project further.

A fragrance that is very strong would do better in winter because in summer it would just smell too heavy.

Have you ever felt that about a fragrant?

Summer requires light fragrances that are refreshing and in winter, its best to those that are warm and rich.

And if winter fragrances are worn in summer they tend to be overwhelming.

I know it would seem like florals are best for summer but they actually aren’t.

When a perfumer is making a perfume there are lots of things they need to consider and measure right as far as top notes, middle notes and base notes are concerned.

In winter its best to go for vanilla, rose, sandalwood or chocolate and in summer opt for lemon, strawberries coconut, jasmine or even pineapple.

Earthy and woody scents are also ideal in winter including spicey scents the like nutmeg, cardamom or cinnamon.

So wearing a winter perfume in summer tends to smell heavy and a summer perfume in winter feels a bit muted.

Sometimes, just picking out just one fragrance from the many can be over whelming.

Why not take a few days to decide?

Go to the store, zero in on two or three options and tell the sales person that you aren’t sure and would like to try one every day and then make up your mind after.

You will find though that if you’re in a hurry, they will have coffee beans that will clear away your nostrils so you can decipher the scents best.

You could also just find a fragrance quiz online, before heading to the store.

To make your fragrance more defined, avoid using scented soaps and lotion so that they do not interfere with the fragrance.

Also, make sure you pick an Eau De Perfum instead of a cologne perfume because colognes tend to be lighter with less scent.

Sometimes we stick to one signature fragrance throughout the year, that’s alright too.

Just remember, if it’s a heavy scent you will need to dab less in summer. And if it’s a summer fragrance more in winter, never be afraid to go against the grain.

After all, fragrances are all about you, so be bold and always smell great!
