Raymeg eyes Chinese market

BUSINESS REPORTER

Zimbabwe’s only rabbit abattoir, Raymeg, is eyeing the Chinese market which faces a deficit in rabbit meat due to increased demand.

The forays into the Chinese market comes after a delegation from the Chinese Embassy visited the Raymeg Rabbit Breeding Centre, Raymeg Abattoir, Raymeg Rabbit Grill and Chillspot and Raymeg Supermarket and Rabbit Distribution Centre in Waterfalls this week.

The Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Huang Minghai pledged Chinese support to the abattoir.

He pledged to introduce Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe to the rabbit abattoir with a view to over a 1000 Chinese workers in Zimbabwe buying rabbit meat from Raymeg.

Huang said he would also assist Raymeg Abattoir to export rabbit meat to China.

China consumes 1 million tonnes of rabbit meat per year. It produces 600 000 tonnes, leaving a deficit of 400 000 tonnes.

Raymeg executive director Paidamoyo Nyamakanga said Raymeg was looking to take advantage of a huge potential export market that exists in China.

The visit by the Chinese delegation comes barely a week after Raymeg opened its first Rabbit Grill as it seeks to grow the rabbit meat market.

Raymeg is a diversified group with interests in strategic communications, agriculture, retail, real estate and holiday resorts. It has operations in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and the Horn of Africa region.
