Rains leave trail of destruction in Masvingo

Heavy rains experienced in Bikita District in Masvingo Province have left a trail of destruction, destroying roads, bridges and schools.

Bikita South MP Josiah Sithole (Zanu PF) said the community was in despair and motorists were having some challenges in navigating the road to Mashoko Mission and other areas. The road network was in bad shape, he said.

“Our road network in Bikita South has been extensively destroyed in areas such as Makuvaza, Chikuku and Mashoko following the heavy rains,” Sithole said.

“We are in the process of rehabilitating the roads and right now the road from Matsvange to Mashoko Mission is being graded. The bridges also have been destroyed. Villagers and motorists are finding it difficult to navigate.”

The MP said some schools such as Neguvhe, Mafaune and Bengura have been destroyed and efforts are in progress to rehabilitate them.

Sithole said villagers in the district were walking long distances to fetch water from the nearest boreholes while others were forced to use water from unprotected sources thereby putting their health at risk.

The lawmaker said villagers in the district were set to benefit from the resuscitation of Bengura irrigation scheme, which was abandoned in 2013.

“We are hoping that villagers are going to benefit from the project and sell farm produce thereby uplifting their lives,” Sithole said.

The project, he said, would be commissioned by the Minister of State Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira.

“These project is a milestone achievement for the people of Bikita South. This is a huge project for the district,” Sithole said.

He said the vaccination programme was going on smoothly as civil servants in the district have heeded the call to be vaccinated.

“To us this is a positive development,” the MP said.
