Non-governmental organisation, Green Governance Trust Zimbabwe has partnered Action Aid to mitigate climate change effects in Chipinge and Chimanimani districts in Manicaland Province, Business Times can report.

The programme will also be extended to Mbire in Mashonaland Central Province and Binga district in Matabeleland North Province.

Speaking during  a recent meeting in Chipinge, Frank Mpahlo, a director for Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust, said climate change was now a living reality hence the need to introduce mitigating measures at village level.

Mpahlo said the strategic partnership will run up to 2025.

He said the programme will empower young people and women to actively participate on issues of climate change policies.

“Climate change is mostly affecting women and the young generation. We therefore intend to co-create alternatives with these target groups to improve their adaptive capacity to climate change.

“The programme is aiming at making sure that everyone is making a contribution at the local level,’’ he said.

Mpahlo said there has been a recurrent cyclone in the last 10 years in these low lying areas. As such his organisation overall objective is  its targeted population to know their roles and take steps to influence an enabling environment for implementing green economic alternatives that will improve their livelihoods by 2025.

Speaking during the same  event, Chief Mapungwana welcomed the programme  saying it will go a long way in preserving the environment.

“As local traditional leadership we play a major role in preserving the environment.

“We have been preserving the environment since long back and anyone coming with issues of preserving the environment is welcome.

“We hope the programme will leave villagers equipped with skills on how to turn our environment green in order to fight climate change,” Chief Mapungwana said.
