The Midlands State University (MSU), through its innovation hub,  has begun manufacturing organic products using  indigenous herbs.

The development was revealed by MSU’s research and innovation hub principal investigator, Ruvimbo Mapaya, who spoke during a tour of the institution’s innovation hub by the United Nations Children’s Fund country representative,Tajudee Oyewale last week.

“As an institution we have embarked on various projects of manufacturing medicine using a local herb, Zumbani. We are using the herb to formulate different products like the nasal spray which can be used to cure respiratory diseases.

“In 2019 there was an upsurge of respiratory diseases and children were also affected. The nasal spray can help cure these diseases and is also suitable for children,” Mapaya said.

She added: “We have manufactured Zumbani inhalers as well which can also be used for respiratory complications. This inhaler is used to clear blocked noses and it’s also suitable for use by children. We also have a Zumbani herbal rub to treat colds.”

Speaking at the same event, Christopher Mabugu, a quality controller at MSU innovation hub, said the institution has also manufactured various products using a finger tree plant. “The finger tree plant has been used for a long time by our forefathers in their livestock pens to chase away snakes due to its strong smell. We have then used this herb to manufacture mosquito repellent which will go a long way in the fight against malaria.

“Naturally children have a tendency of throwing off blankets when they sleep, hence, they get bitten by mosquitoes. The repellent will come in very handy in such scenarios,” he said.

From its innovation hub, the institution has also manufactured a number of products like soaps, lotions, and various detergents.
