MaSibanda: The Voice that gets Midlands going each morning

Some like to call her Kymie or Maiguru while others know her as simply MaSibanda (after her totem) but Kim Gogwe Sibanda is keeping Gweru or is it the whole of Midlands Province going each morning.

 Delectable Kim

The 31-year-old breakfast presenter for 98.4 Midlands FM, the station owned by AB Communications, has long endeared itself with the City of Progress’ glitterati.

Her flawless presentation alongside Reason Sekeremo makes for interesting early radio morning show with their unmistakable accents.

But for MaSibanda her life does not begin and end with radio as Gem Nation News discovers.

“I was born in a family of seven, two boys and five girls and I’m the fifth. I attended several schools Cecil John Rhodes and Goldridge Primary Schools before I proceeded to Kyle College and Lomagundi College. I’m a lover of all this farming I’m also handy with my hands I love to cook, bake and I’m quiet the hairdresser too,” she explained.

MaSibanda believes radio is her forte and her going into broadcasting was by no means a mistake, thanks to her mother, who nudged her to try out her luck on the airwaves.

“My mom is my inspiration . . . I was very chatty and adventurous growing up and when she heard an advert on radio she thought it would be a perfect fit and it was,” she said.

Her music range on radio is very diverse and she plays all the genre much to the delight of her fans.

“I enjoy Afro pop perhaps but nothing too specific. I am a huge fan of good sounds whatever the genre,” she said.

Most of her shows are characterized by good music and engaging talk shows but every show is a new experience.

“I guess public opinion is hard to deal with. You can never be too sure if what comes out of your mouth will offend or inspire someone. You constantly trying to be the best version of yourself and hope bad pray it touches a few people in a positive way,” she said about her experience on radio.

For her, it is a combination of hard work and research which take her an hour to prepare before she goes live on air.

“Often when people recognise me in the streets I get overwhelmed. I’m people shy. I never know how to react appropriately.  I guess that’s why I love radio,” she said.

Her biggest regret is that she never get to spend more time with her mother before her passing on.

“I would probably be way better today,” she said.

On motherhood, MaSibanda says she has: “two amazing kids that are my life a handsome young man and my princess. Being their mom makes me feel like no matter how bad the world may see me to those two I am their world and it’s such a blessing.”

During her spare time MaSibanda enjoys a good read and gardening as well as travelling.

 At ease . . . Kymie

As beautiful as she is she could neither deny nor confirm if she was seeing someone.

“Love is a beautiful thing for those that have found it,” she said.

When she is not on radio or doing her gardening MaSibanda revealed she has started a new career in “marketing and or consulting and a bit of event management.” “I am humbled to be where I am because of them and I can only strive to do better for them,” she said about her listeners.-GemNationNews
