Magaya elected new LSZ president

Harare lawyer and Senior Partner at Coghlan Welsh & Guest, Councillor Wellington Magaya  has been elected president of the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ).

Magaya will be deputised by Councillor Rumbidzai Matambo.

The two were elected at the first Council meeting of the year on February 1, 2021.

The meeting followed the election of new councillors at the 2020 Annual General Meeting in December.

The new LSZ president takes over from Councillor Thandaza Masiye-Moyo who stepped down after serving his full two-year term.

Masiye-Moyo said he was leaving the Society in very capable hands and was confident the profession’s future was guaranteed.

Councillor Magaya will serve a two-year term to December 2022.In his acceptance speech Councillor Magaya said he was “humbled by the trust the fellow Councillors of the Law Society had bestowed on him.”

Key among the responsibilities Magaya targeted to deal which is maintaining the integrity of the profession.

The new president said he takes over leadership of the Society at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the world and the profession has not been spared.

He said the Council would, under his stewardship, strive to improve efficiencies at policy and operational level.

Magaya specialises in Commercial Law, Project development and Financing, and employment law.

He has advised major local and international corporates in the commodities and renewable energy sectors.

Magaya has been involved in the negotiation, structuring and advising clients in high value transactions and in respect of all regulatory requirements.

He has over the years been involved in commercial and employment dispute resolution in both local and international tribunals LSZ was formed in 1981 to replace the previous bar association.

The membership is drawn from all registered legal practitioners residing in Zimbabwe whether in private practice, in commerce or in civil service.
