Hope Masike’s latest song Shuwa reassures, consoles

PATIENCE MUSA

Chiwoniso Maraire had shown the world that mbira had room in the contemporary world.

Now, Hope Masike has gone beyond that to amplify the concept at a time when most young artistes are venturing into a number of modern genres.

Masike has  stood firm in her passion for the instrument known as the ‘voice of the ancestors’.

Her latest single Shuwa  is magical.

There was a time when mbira music was big business.

These were the days when the Book Café would fill up with music fanatics from all walks of life.

You would find them all squashed upstairs at the Fife Avenue shops, all tables full with very little standing space left.

Suddenly,  it seemed  like Harare had woken to the magical sound of the mbira.

Mbira dzeNharira, the late Chiwoniso Maraire, Chirikure Chirikure entertained audiences, feeding them their weekly dosage.

Masike has made herself known for standing firm in her passion.

Those that had walked before her, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, Mbuya Madhuve, and Ambuya Botsa had kept their mbira sound style roots firmly in the traditional.

Shuwa comes of a conversation, reassuring, consoling.

In the first bars of the song Masike’s voice and the mbira envelope the listener in a warm hug as the music moves into the second part of the song.

The chorus brings to light a Hope Masike that most of us never really get to hear and discovering her is a dream.

It is a beautiful song!

Composed by Hope Masike and produced by Andrew Baird, theirs is a match made in heaven.

The song makes one wants to sing along and when the song breaks down into chanting it positively gives goosebumps.
