Harare goes for virtual meetings

The Harare City Council will discard physical meetings for virtual debates among councillors as it moves to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, an official has said.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March, local companies and organisations have been holding virtual meetings to contain the spread of the virus.

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed firms have been holding virtual annual general meetings and analysts briefings after the government restricted physical meetings to a maximum of 50 participants.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the local authority was planning to hold virtual meetings as a precautionary measure.

No councillor has so far tested positive for Covid-19.

The Harare city council has 46 councillors but has not been fully operational as 21 councillors have been recalled by MDC- T leadership of Thokozani Khupe for insubordination.

“We are hoping that we can be able to have our debates virtually and we shall do some trial runs in the coming weeks and see how it goes,” Mafume said.

The move by council to go for virtual meetings comes after Parliament adopted the route to curb the spread of the Covid -19.

This came after 25 MPs tested positive for Covid-19 forcing Parliament to stop debates to allow for the fumigation of the building.

Harare City Council has closed its 40 municipal clinics as the country is battling with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Budget consultative meetings are being held virtually.
