Expedite street adoption process, BCC told

TENDAI BHEBE IN BULAWAYO

The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) should expedite the process to allocate streets to corporates and others that pledged to do regular cleaning as part of efforts to restore the city to its former glory, the Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Judith Ncube has said.

Ncube made the remarks at a clean up campaign in Bulawayo last week.

It comes at a time when streets and pavements in Bulawayo are a complete mess as vendors leave rotting produce on the streets.

“ We encourage them to expedite the process. It’s a noble arrangement where streets are going to be adopted (by corporations), “Ncube said.

She added: “After leaving this place clean, the people who work here will have to adopt a culture of cleanliness because they would have seen how clean the environment would be. “

Last year, BBC identified 43 waste hotspots in the central business district (CBD).

The local authority also organised a similar what it called the Bulawayo spring cleaning week from September 12 to 16 which mainly focused on clearing all sanitary lane dumps in the CBD.

Speaking at the same event, the Environmental Management Agency provincial manager for Bulawayo, Sithembisiwe Ndlovu, said people should keep the city clean.

“We hope that people will be able to change their mindsets around waste management. We’re happy with the amount of waste recycling we’re seeing around the city and hope most people will also follow the initiative and ensure that the city is brought back to its former glory,” she said.

In December 2018, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched the national clean-up campaign and declared the first Friday of each calendar month as a national clean-up day.
