SOUTH AFRICA – Zimbabwean musician Leornard Zhakata thrilled thousands who graced this year’s edition of the Royal Heritage festival that was held over the weekend in Thohoyandou, South Africa.

The annual festival that features several South African artists, invites one Zimbabwean musician every year.

Last year Alick Macheso performed at the same event.

This year Zhakata shared stage with AKA, Tira, Shekainah, Zonke, DJ Zinhle, Busiswa, Lerato Kganyago and Jonas Gwangwa among others.

For the few minutes he was on stage the musician played his yesteryear hits “Batai Manzwi”, “Mugove”, “Hupenyu Mutoro” and “Madam Boss”.

According to the musician’s manager Ben Zhakata, the festival has opened doors for them to collaborate with South African musicians.

“This is a platform that we have discussions with musicians on possible collaborations. We have now activated some communication with several musicians here for collaborations,” said Zhakata.

He said they were looking forward to be part of the festival again next year.

“Such festivals are useful because we need to take notes from the musicians based here. This is a big festival that gives us a platform to share ideas with other great names in SA,” he said.

Event organiser Shandukani Nesengani told Business Times that they have always valued Zimbabwean musicians, explaining why they are always on the festival line-up.

“This is our 7th edition and we are happy that it is growing by each year. I am grateful to have Zimbabwean acts each year. They have shown their talent and people appreciate them,” he said.

Zhakata is arguably one of the most talented names to come from Zimbabwe.

The camera shy musician still commands a large following in the country.
