‘Think Pink’annual triathlon a success

October is always a busy month, always devoted to breast cancer awareness, and with a number of functions held to raise funds for the Cancer Association. All funds raised are directed towards the running of the Cancer Centre, who do an amazing amount of critical outreach work and are always in need of every cent they are able to raise, to keep the Centre viable for their councilors and day to day running expenses. All for a good cause that is for sure. On ZiFM Stereo this month, on our daily health tip show with PSMAS, we have concentrated on Breast Cancer tips and recommendations for ladies to get regularly and routinely checked every year by having a mammogram or ultrasound. Men are also prone to cancer, and need regular check-ups, as the earlier the disease is diagnosed the easier it is to treat and cure.

My month of Think Pink, is always a busy one, and part of my CSR is to officiate at the annual “Think Pink Golf Day” held at Chapman Golf Club. The committee have organised this event for the past 11 years. The function always attracts a great crowd of golfers and supporters who come out for this whole day event, with morning and afternoon tee off times due to its popularity. Some come dressed up for the day in fancy dress just to make the day a fun giving day. My duty is to handle the prize giving, and then to auction a few items which have been donated, the proceeds going to the Cancer Association. I am told they raised well over $25,000 on the day.

It’s always fun extracting money from folk who have had a few drinks, but who are happy to part with a few dollars for a worthy cause. My next Pink assignment was being roped in by one Wayne Davidson to take part in the Think Pink Annual Triathlon on Sunday. After much discussion and arm twisting I was entered. Not sure if I was excited or crazy, but again for a good cause so I decided to dig deep and do it.

It was a mini Triathlon, so I could sort of handle myself! A five width swim, followed by a 5 km bike ride and finally a 1,25 km run. My first mistake was that I lost count on the swim and swam an extra 2 widths!! Silly me, with much laughter from the crowd that assembled to watch. Anyway the rest is history, and I completed the event in what I thought was a decent time, even with the extra lengths I did. I am told that a total of just over $2 000 was raised for the Cancer Association. All credit to Debbie Jeans, herself a breast cancer survivor, and the Zimbabwe Triathlon Association for putting on a great show as always. Away from the Cancer events a group of locals decided they would train to box each other and raise money for charity. The chosen charity being St Joseph’s Home for Boys. These guys trained their hearts and souls out, to challenge for the “KING OF THE RING “at function held at Wild Geese Lodge on Friday last week. Well, done to all concerned, they raised a fair packet of cash for St Joseph’s on the night and from all accounts it was a good night .
