Teachers, govt talks in limbo

As cost of living takes its toll

Teachers under the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) have warned that the prolonged disregard by the government of their plight was getting out of hand and the “dire consequences” cannot be ignored any longer.

The teachers have for long been demanding a salary increment pegged in the United States dollar and improved working conditions but their demands have fallen on deaf ears.

“As representatives of the hardworking teachers who form the backbone of our nation’s public services, we, (ZIMTA), finds it imperative to address the current stalemate in negotiations with the government, arising out of failure to convene consultations under NJNC,” ZIMTA said in a statement.

“The prolonged inaction and disregard for our concerns have dire consequences that cannot be ignored any longer.
Our dedicated teachers’, who tirelessly serve the public day in and day out, are grappling with abysmally low salaries that fail to keep pace with the rising cost of living. The lack of a fair and living wage not only undermines the morale and well-being of our members but also jeopardizes our ability to provide for our families and to contribute meaningfully to aggregate demand in the economy.”

The teachers said the deplorable conditions of service, including inadequate resources, lack of essential equipment, and limited access to proper training, further exacerbate the challenges they face.

“These conditions not only hinder our ability to perform duties effectively but also compromise the quality of services provided to the public.”

ZIMTA also lamented the dire situation retired teachers find themselves in saying they are failing to provide for themselves and their families.

“Many retired teachers are struggling to make ends meet, as their pensions fall short of covering basic necessities. The government’s failure to address the concerns of retirees and provide adequate support reflects a callous disregard for those who have served our country faithfully.”
