Reject opposition calls for mayhem: ED

HARARE – Zanu PF presidential candidate Emerson Mnangagwa has warned against opposition parties who were pushing for anarchy ahead of the July harmonized elections.

His remarks during the official opening of the Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe offices in Harare, follow threats by the opposition MDC Alliance that they will block the elections and also announce results of the elections as they no longer had faith in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

The MDC Alliance has threatened to mobilize people to picket at the ZEC headquarters in downtown Harare until their demands are met.

“As we approach the final days before our harmonized elections, l appeal for continued peace, harmony, unity and love among all Zimbabweans,” Mnangagwa said Monday.

“We are one family. As we canvass for political votes, let us remain alive to the fact that we are all one people, one nation, united by one flag and one national anthem,” he said.

“I urge fellow Zimbabweans to reject maneuvers by some among us who cause instability and mayhem in our beautiful and peaceful country,” he said.

The opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, has called for a media briefing tomorrow where sources close to him say a major announcement on the way forward will be made.

Mnangagwa urged Potraz to be transparent in its use of the Universal Services Fund saying it should be used to ensure everyone is connected to the information super highway.

“I further challenge Potraz to be more transparent in the use of the USF to ensure broader access to postal and telecommunication services by all our people regardless of geographical location, ethnicity or other factors. In this vein, the expectation of my government is that you will increase financing of extension of ICT infrastructure to under services areas, underprivileged, women and youths.”

Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security Minister Supa Mandiwanzira said the completion of the offices was made possible by Mnangagwa’s work ethic since coming into office.

“We achieved this on the basis of clear direction and guidance drawn from you especially your pronouncements on doing away with gross inefficiencies and incompetence that had become synonymous with projects like this.”

“We can only thank you for driving the renewal of our focus as a nation towards a selfless and result oriented work ethic,” Mandiwanzira said.

Potraz Director General Dr Gift Machengete says the regulator will continue working to deliver and ensure they help the thrust of the new administration to use ICTs in ensuring Zimbabwe remains open for business.
