One of Africa’s most breathtaking sporting events, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, is gearing up for another spectacular edition this year on July 6, with organisers confirming that over 5,000 runners from 31 countries are expected to participate.
Brent Williamson, the race director, says registration numbers for this year’s race are outpacing previous editions — a clear sign of growing global excitement around what has become one of Africa’s premier destination marathons.
“Since opening registration in March, we’ve already filled more than two-thirds of our entry slots,” said Williamson.
“The response has been phenomenal, and it reflects the international recognition this event now commands. We’re urging all prospective runners to secure their spots now — once we hit our capacity, that’s it. We have to cap entries to ensure a world-class experience that meets our safety and logistical standards.”
In 2024, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon attracted 5,000 runners from 31 countries, cementing its reputation as a bucket-list race for athletes and adventure-seekers from around the world. These included Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, and New Zealand.
The event also welcomed athletes from Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zambia—underscoring its growing international appeal and status as one of Africa’s leading marathon events.
Hosted in one of the most spectacular locations in the world, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon offers four race categories: a 42.195km full marathon, a 21.0975km half marathon, a 21km team relay (two runners each completing 10.5km), and a 7km fun run.
The scenic route takes runners through Victoria Falls town, across the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, and along Zambezi Drive, which winds through National Park known for its stunning landscapes and rich wildlife. The route offers breathtaking views of the waterfall and opportunities to see animals such as elephants and impalas along the way.
To improve safety and runner experience, Williamson confirmed that minor route changes will be implemented this year.
“In previous years, we encountered some congestion due to runners crossing paths on the same route,” he said. “This year, we’ve made adjustments to ensure a smoother flow and enhance the overall experience.”
The event also places strong emphasis on corporate social investment (CSI) and sustainability. Organisers will continue supporting local charity initiatives and environmental clean-ups, both ahead of and after race day.
“Our commitment to preserving the pristine beauty of Victoria Falls remains central to the marathon,” said Williamson. “We encourage participants to support our charity partners: Vic Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, Greenline Africa Trust, Pristine Society Vic Falls, and Ele-Collection.”
Endorsed by World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and hosted in collaboration with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon stands as a shining example of how sport can foster international tourism, community development, and cross-cultural unity.
