The race for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) presidency has reached a fever pitch, with Twine Phiri, a celebrated football administrator and former CAPS United boss, expressing confidence as he campaigns in Saturday’s highly anticipated elections.

Phiri, renowned for transforming CAPS United into a dominant force and spearheading significant growth in the Premier Soccer League, has outlined an ambitious vision for ZIFA. His campaign centers on digitalizing operations, promoting transparency, and restoring corporate trust in Zimbabwean football.

However, the path to the presidency is fiercely contested. Phiri faces stiff competition from notable contenders, including Nqobile Magwizi, Marshal Gore, Phillimon Machana, Martin Kweza, and Makwinji Soma Phiri.

Kenny Ndebele, stepping down as Premier Soccer League CEO, is the front-runner for the vice presidency. Yet, his bid is challenged by former ZIFA vice president Omega Sibanda, alongside Peter Dube, James Takavada, and Francis Nyamutsamba.

The battle for ZIFA board positions is equally intense, with over 30 candidates vying for six available seats. Among them are experienced administrators and ambitious newcomers eager to reshape the future of Zimbabwean football.

Modern Ngwenya, a seasoned football administrator, stands out with his extensive experience as Highlanders’ vice chairman, acting chairman, PSL Board of Governors member, and ZIFA Congress member. Ngwenya played a pivotal role in securing the BanABC sponsorship extension and the NetOne and Sakunda Holdings sponsorships for Dynamos and Highlanders.

Youth development advocate Walter Musanhu presents another compelling case. His innovative Jadel Football Academy and “2034 World Cup Project” aim to place Zimbabwe on the global football stage, focusing on nurturing young talent and long-term strategic growth.

Cuthbert Chitima, boasting over 25 years of experience in banking and football development, emphasizes corporate governance and inclusivity. “I transformed Gunners FC into a Champions League club with limited resources, showcasing my ability to build success through teamwork and strategy. My vision focuses on development, competition, and a unified philosophy for all national teams—from youth to senior levels,” Chitima stated.

Lewis Muzhara has pledged to uplift women’s football through grassroots initiatives and corporate sponsorships. His vision includes integrating football programs into schools, organizing annual tournaments, and advocating for greater representation of women in football administration.

As the elections approach, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Twine Phiri’s ambitious agenda and the diversity of the challengers promise a dramatic turning point for Zimbabwean football.

With candidates bringing a wealth of experience and bold ideas, all eyes are on Saturday’s showdown. The outcome will determine the leadership tasked with revitalizing Zimbabwean football and guiding it into a new era of progress and inclusivity.
