Macheso revisits abandoned venues

Sungura maestro Alick Macheso will spend this weekend performing at venues he had abandoned several years ago.

He has decided to call it “Weekend of Reunion”.

The sungura King, as the musician is fondly referred to, will perform at Pamuzinda Highway Escape, a venue he had abandoned over a year ago, before travelling to Kariba where he last performed five years ago.

This year Macheso released a competitive album titled “Dzinosvitsa Kure” that managed to bring back the musician’s glory.

It’s unfortunate that the age of technology we are living in is dominated by a culture of  piracy, which has affected revenue generated from album sales.

An older album from Macheso titled “Simbaradzo” has been his best-selling album for a while now. However, his recent release is pegged to surpass it given the amount of support it has attracted.

The sungura music genre has been under siege with newer genres like Zimdancehall and the new age urban music trend dominating the gig circuit.

Only Macheso and a few other musicians have managed to defend sungura, creating timeless classics that are able to speak to a broader audience.

To date, his new album competes with Killer T’s “Mashoko Anopfura”, leaving critics to say that any of the two albums are deserving of the title ‘album of the year’.

Macheso’s manager Tich Makahamadze said they are revisiting some abandoned venues to cater for all fans.

“When we released our album “Dzinosvitsa Kure” we had people from all walks of life who took a keen interest in our brand. Indeed years have passed since Macheso and Orchestra Mberikwazvo were formed, but this particular album has brought a fresh new energy to our brand,” he said.
