Government has withdrawn licences to service stations belonging to Glow Petroleum because they were overcharging fuel during the recent crisis which gripped the country.

“They got punished because they were charging prices above what was stipulated by Zera (Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority),” Energy and Power Development minister Joram Gumbo said as minister briefed journalists after a Cabinet meeting.

Early this month, Vice President Kembo Mohadi warned that Government would crack the whip on fuel operators and retailers that overcharge consumers and motorists.

Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister Monica Mutsvangwa said President Emmerson Mnangagwa  engaged seed and fertiliser suppliers soon after the cabinet meeting and they have agreed to revise downwards the soaring prices of the products that had gone beyond the reach of ordinary Zimbabweans ahead of the farming season.

She said some retailers were reviewing their prices downwards after the price hikes in recent weeks.

“However, we are still concerned that others continue to peg the prices beyond the reach of our citizens,” said Mutsvangwa.

Prices of basic commodities have been heading northwards after Government reviewed the intermediated transfer tax to 2 cents per dollar for transactions above $10. Transactions above $500 000 attracts a flat tax of $10 000.

Before the review, the tax was 5 cents per transaction.
