Corruption hit ZINARA tollgates

SUKOLUHLE NDLOVU IN GWERU

The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) says rampant fraud and corruption has hit the organisation.

The administration’s acting CEO, Gilfern Moyo, who spoke at a recent anti-corruption workshop held in Gweru said a number of employees at the tollgates have since been fired.

“There is an issue of theft at tollgates as exemplified by the Flamingo tollgate issue along Gweru-Shurugwi Road. A total of seven employees resigned to avoid being arraigned before the disciplinary committee.  Eight were dismissed while two were acquitted following that incident,” he said.

Moyo said the administration has since ceded the hiring of contractors to road authorities in a bid to curb corruption within the institution.

“Corruption is now a legacy issue which was captured in the Grant Thornton Report. To put corruption to an end, ZINARA has since stopped doing contracts for projects and we have surrendered the issue of contractors to road authorities. As an administration we are just sticking to our legislative mandate of collecting and disbursing funds,” he said.

The workshop sought to strengthen ZINARA’s systems to fight against corruption.
