Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has underscored the need for deeper collaboration between Zimbabwe and Zambia in order to leverage advanced technologies such as solar mini-grids, energy storage systems, and smart grids, with the goal of expanding electricity access to even the most remote areas of both southern Africa nations.

Speaking at the inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit in the resort city of Victoria Falls this week, Chiwenga emphasized that expanding energy access is essential for driving sustainable economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens in both countries.

“Energy access is a fundamental right that supports vital sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and job creation,” Chiwenga said. “We must ensure that no one is left behind.”

He further stated that expanding energy access is a key foundation for sustainable development in Zimbabwe and Zambia and a crucial step toward securing a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for future generations.

Chiwenga highlighted the importance of innovation and collaboration in transforming the energy sectors of both nations, pointing to the potential for attracting investment in large-scale energy projects.

He also referenced the Kariba Dam—a shared energy resource between Zimbabwe and Zambia—as a symbol of their commitment to clean energy.

“Our region is rich in energy resources—hydropower, solar, and wind—but these must be harnessed sustainably and equitably to meet the growing demands of our populations,” Chiwenga said.

This call for collaboration comes at a time when both countries face significant challenges in their energy sectors, including power supply shortages and slow progress toward achieving universal electricity access.

To address these challenges, both governments are working to expand electricity access through a combination of solar power and grid expansion.

Zambia’s Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, echoed Chiwenga’s sentiments, noting the importance of innovation and partnership.

He also highlighted Zambia’s newly developed integrated resource plan, which focuses on increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix.

“The time has come for both of us to embrace innovation, sustainability, and collaboration to build a more resilient and prosperous energy future,” Chikote said.
