Zimbabwe’s largest platinum producer, Zimplats, is undergoing a leadership transition, with long-serving chief executive Alexander Mhembere retiring after 19 years at the helm and veteran mining executive Stanley Segula taking over from November 1.
The company said the transition followed a structured succession process, with the board finalising the retirement arrangements on October 30.
Mhembere will step down as chief executive and executive director with effect from November 1, 2026, but will remain chairman of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Private) Limited, providing continuity and retaining institutional knowledge.
During his 19-year tenure, Mhembere oversaw Zimplats’ transformation into a major integrated platinum group metals (PGM) producer, steering successive investment programmes in underground mining, processing capacity and renewable energy.
His leadership also helped strengthen the company’s contribution to Zimbabwe’s mineral beneficiation ambitions, while supporting the development of mining skills, local enterprises and infrastructure, alongside partnerships with Government and host communities.
Zimplats chairman Professor Sydney Mufamadi said Mhembere’s legacy was reflected in the business he had built and the leadership capacity he was leaving behind.
“Alex’s contribution is evident in the business he has helped build and the leadership strength he leaves behind. On behalf of the board, I thank him for his outstanding service to Zimplats and the broader Implats Group,” he said.
Mufamadi said Segula’s appointment reflected deliberate succession planning and the depth of executive talent within the organisation.
“Stanley’s appointment is the outcome of deliberate succession planning and reflects the depth of talent within Zimplats. He combines a thorough understanding of the business with strategic judgment, operational experience and capital discipline. The board has every confidence in his ability to lead our next phase,” he said.
Segula, who joined the Implats Group in April 2008, brings more than 30 years of experience across the mining value chain. He has served as managing director of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines since November 2015, overseeing initiatives aimed at advancing mechanisation, innovation and operational efficiency.
He holds a PhD in Strategic Management and Leadership, an MBA and a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mining Engineering. He also holds a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency and is a Certified Professional Engineer.
His appointment comes as Zimplats seeks to build on its existing operational base while maintaining investment discipline, improving productivity and deepening value addition in Zimbabwe’s platinum industry.
The company said the handover would be supported by a structured transfer of executive responsibilities and key stakeholder relationships to ensure continuity in strategy and operations.
Mhembere said leading Zimplats had been a privilege, crediting the company’s progress to employees and the support of its stakeholders.
“Our progress reflects our people’s commitment and the support of the board, Government, traditional leaders, host communities and business partners. I thank them for their trust and partnership. I hand over with confidence in Stanley and the team,” he said.
Segula said his immediate priorities would centre on workplace safety, operational performance and disciplined investment.
“I am honoured to lead Zimplats. Our priorities remain clear: keep our people safe, strengthen operational performance and invest with discipline. I look forward to working with our people and stakeholders to build on this foundation and deliver lasting value,” he said.
