Zim Red Cross embarks on cholera awareness campaign

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has embarked on roadshows in most parts of Harare raising awareness against cholera.

ZRCS has so far covered several western suburbs, including Budiriro, Glen Norah, Glen View and Mufakose. They are now taking the same campaign to Chitungwiza and Mabvuku-Tafara.

The organisation is donating non-food items like buckets to several households in those areas.

The Humanitarian secretary general, Maxwell Phiri, said they were targeting schools and communities in raising awareness against cholera.

“Cholera was recently declared an emergency disaster and as ZRCS we are responding quickly though our disaster management programmes. Part of our response is to have several awareness campaigns as well as to donate some non-food items to the affected communities,” he added.

Phiri said they will continue to engage communities in raising awareness against the disease. ZRCS joins government, several organisations as well as individuals in the fight against the disease that has claimed several lives in the country.

They are working with Budiriro Cultural group from Kadoma in the awareness campaign.

The organisation’s humanitarian ambassador, Alick Macheso, said it was high time every individual becomes responsible for ending the disease.

“Personal hygiene is one key element in ending cholera. It now goes beyond organisations, the government or anyone else but you as an individual,” Macheso said.
