The United States (US) government has pledged US$150,000 through its US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDs Relief  (PEPFAR) to help fight COVID-19 in Zimbabwe.

The funding will assist people living with HIV.

“Three PEPFAR clinical implementing partners, Organisation for Public Health Interventions and Development , International Training and Education Centre for Health and Zimbabwe Association of Church-related Hospitals, will carry out the activities,” the US Embassy in Harare said in a statement.

The US said was committed to continued care and treatment for people living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

The contribution  is an addition to the US Agency for International Development’s US$470,000 contribution  to the World Health Organisation to support Zimbabwe’s fight against COVID-19 announced in March.

Since 1980, the US has provided over US$1bn in health assistance to strengthen health systems in Zimbabwe.
