TENDAI BHEBE IN BULAWAYO
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda, says Parliament of Zimbabwe secretariat needs to be capacitated for them to be effective in discharging their supportive role to the legislators.
Mudenda, who spoke at the capacity building workshop in Bulawayo said it was critical for the staff to meet international standards.
“We are here to conduct a workshop for various groups of our staff that are involved in speech writing and drawing up motions to be allowed in the house, among other duties.
“This will also assist them when preparing speeches for presiding officers, Members of Parliament when they proceed to attend regional and international meetings or conferences,” Mudenda said.
He added: “We felt that it was essential for this crop of staff to be upscaled in their skills so that they can produce speeches, write ups on motions as well as committee reports that exhibit the highest degree of excellence and in that way they elevate the status of Parliament as a very important institution of government being the second arm of state in our government.”
The training comes as Zimbabwe lawmakers are set to participate in the forthcoming regional conference, the SADC Parliamentary Forum, a regional inter-parliamentary body for member States.
Well, Zimbabwe is part of the global community, we have to measure to international standards and in doing so we need to come up with position papers, speeches that show some degree of excellence.
“We should be judged as one of the world class Parliamentarians,” Mudenda said.
“So it is important to look at what we do and what value we give to the international community.”
