Rwanda will today commemorate 25 years since the genocide which left 800 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus dead.

The commemorations of the 1994 genocide will take place at the Arupe University in the capital.

Rwanda’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, James Musoni said the Rwandan community, members of the diplomatic corps and Zimbabweans will participate in Zimbabwe’s maiden commemoration.

Ambassador Musoni said genocide should never be allowed to take place anywhere in the world.

During the Genocide over one million Tutsis were killed in cold blood in 100 days from the 7th of April 1994 to July 1994.

“Many of you have been with us all along, and we cherish you for contributing to the healing and re-building of Rwanda,” President Kagame said while addressing world leaders and thousands of Rwandans who attended the beginning of the commemoration.

“I also thank my fellow Rwandans, who joined hands to recreate this country. In 1994, there was no hope, only darkness. Today, light radiates from this place. How did it happen?

“We hold each other up. Our bodies and minds bear amputations and scars, but none of us is alone. Together, we have woven the tattered threads of our unity into a new tapestry.,” said President Kagame, adding: “Sisters became mothers. Neighbors became uncles. Strangers became friends.”
