Post poll violence: Death toll rises to six

HARARE – Police Senior  Assistant Commissioner  Charity  Charamba told journalists this evening that police had received  a report that  the people  succumbed  to the injuries sustained  in  yesterday’s  skirmish in  the  capital.

“The  number of deaths  has risen to  six as they  have succumbed to  injuries and 14 people remain  hospitalised.  The   situation  on the ground  in Harare remains  tense and  we continue to  monitor  it together with  members of the defence  forces,”
Charamba said.

She said the  police  had obtained  a   search warrant and  raided  MDC Alliance headquarters  today  and arresting  26 people  in the process that include Shadreck  Mashayamombe ,  an MDC  Alliance losing  candidates for  Harare South constituency.

“We are still interested in interviewing  the  MDC  Alliance’s Tendai  Biti  over  yesterday’s  violence, as 22  shops were  destroyed 8  vehicles were  destroyed  as   4 000 MDC   supporters armed with iron bars and sticks  stormed  the    capital  disrupting  business operation and traffic  movement,” she  said.

“We want  people to remain calm as  police are  monitoring  the  situation together with  the army so that  we contain any disturbances,” Charamba said.
