All eyes will be on Only Him when the country’s oldest and biggest horse racing, the Castle Tankard, returns to the local racing circles at Borrowdale Racecourse on May 7.

Only Him is the favourite ahead of multiple winner Lilly Blue.

Only Him, which will be ridden by Steyn, and Lily Blue are from the  highly rated  trainer Bridget Stido’s stable.

However, Finchatton from the Gokhan Terzi stable, which romped to victory in the last OK Grand Challenge, cannot be ruled out.

Love the View is a danger to the field. It’s still unknown  on the local scene. It recently came second in South Africa.

Sponsored by Zimbabwe’s biggest brewer, Delta Corporation, the race was unveiled at Borrowdale Park on Monday this week with US$50 000 at stake. A total of 13  runners entered the 2000 metres race.

“It’s good to be back  launching  our 62nd  edition of the  Castle Tankard after a two year absence due to Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s event will be bigger and better,”Tich Rinemota, Delta Beverages general manager said.

Highly rated trainer Bridget Stido’s stable will  also have Citrusdal in the field.

Thomas Mason will bring on board True Beauty and Love the View.

Holy Land, Armstrong and Mr Greenlight are from the Vannessa Birke stable while Heir Line and Three to  Tango are from Debra Swanson.

Trainer Thomas Masson said: “It’s a  very open tankard.”

Bridgette Stido said: “It’s fantastic to have tankard back. The danger is Love the View. It’s a newcomer.”

The Castle Tankard horse racing dates to 1904.
