Masvingo City Council is finally developing a new dumpsite located at Cambria Farm, a move which has averted a ticking health bomb in the country’s oldest city, Business Times can report.

There has been an outcry over the current dumpsite located between the two residential suburbs of Runyararo West, and Victoria Ranch was putting the lives of the residents under serious threat.

Masvingo City Council Mayor, Collen Maboke, said the government allocated a 12-hectare land at Cambria Farm for the new dumpsite.

He said the process to develop the new dumpsite would take up to three months.

“We have started our project of grading the new dumpsite at Cambria Farm, so we expect this to take about three months to get finished. By September we expect to be using the new dumpsite. Relevant approvals from EMA and others have been obtained,” Maboke told Business Times.

Masvingo United and Ratepayers Alliance spokesperson Godfrey Mtimba applauded the move by the local authority.

“We are happy as residents association that the local authority has final heeded our call that it should remove the dumpsite that is in-between Runyararo West and Victoria Ranch to a farm it was allocated by government as it had been affecting residents’ health due to inhaling too much smoke,” Mtimba said.

He added that the local authority should quickly develop the new site as they would end up only grading the new place and leaving the started project unfinished.

“Since it has begun grading the new location, we encourage them to finish the project so that they begin to dump waste there while there is still time,” Mtimba said.
