Mutare running out of burial space

SYDNEY SAIZE IN MUTARE

Mutare is fast running out of burial space forcing the local authority to contemplate calling on the residents to consider cremation.

Mutare mayor, Blessing Tandi told the Business Times that land for graves had been exhausted at the main Yeovil Cemetery.

The city is now relying on the Dangamvura burial area, which is also fast filling up owing to Covid-19-related deaths.

“As council we are still looking for alternative land to be set aside for a graveyard while at the same time we are considering engaging the residents and ratepayers on the possibility of taking a deep thought on cremating our beloved departed ones,” Tandi said.

He said cremation could be an avenue worth pursuing, given the challenges of land being faced by the local authority.

“We are between a hard and a rock place, we have lost land through expansionist construction instead of building going up. A lot of arable land has been lost through that; and it is high time we urbanise and begin constructing going up into the skies,” he said.

Tandi said the matter of land shortage was getting out of hand and had also affected the urban renewal programme that was set to have kicked off earlier this year.
