MP calls MDC Alliance to order

HARARE – Harare West Member of Parliament and now independent candidate for the same constituency ahead of the July 30 harmonized elections, Jessie Majome, said the opposition MDC Alliance has lost focus in pursuing the party’s founding values and principles.

Majome was recently fired from the party together with Mabvuku-Tafara MP James Maridadi after the duo opted to stand as independent candidates.

Majome, however, said she was yet to receive a letter of expulsion, insisting that if she was to be fired, it would be a sad day for democracy.

She said the party was now characterized by lies, deceit, hatred, hate speech and chaos; a diversion from its founding values.

“I haven’t received any letter, they haven’t communicated anything to me,” she said.

“If the party decides to fire me, I won’t stop them but I am at peace. My conscience is clear and I believe I am doing the right thing. What attracted me to the party is its founding values and principles and we hope it goes back to that. In my case, there was treachery, too many lies, lack of fairness and cheating – that was extremely undemocratic,” she said.

“I am receiving a tremendous amount of vilification from people who purport to be in the party, but I can tell are not from Harare West, who push hate speech that is very sexist and so on. This is not what the MDC was founded upon. Lately, from what I see, there is no respect for women, children, the value of solidarity, sisterhood and brotherhood.”

She said that despite all the vilification, she was confident she will reclaim the seat.

“I am at peace because I believe I am doing the right thing. My conscience is clear. I am carrying on with my work to win Harare West and to represent the people in the constituency,” she said.

Majome is facing Joana Mamombe who is representing the MDC Alliance.

Majome decided to stand as an independent candidate after complaining of gross irregularities in the party’s internal polls in dynamics which appeared to favour Mamombe.

The MDC-T has split into two following the death of Tsvangirai with Chamisa leading the MDC Alliance faction while Thokozani Khupe has maintained the MDC-T banner.
