Former vice president Kembo Mohadi will retain his post as Zanu PF’s second secretary despite his resignation from government, the governing party has said.

Mohadi resigned on Monday over allegation of “immoral unions”.

Briefing journalists yesterday at the ZANU-PF headquarters during the party’s 349th Politburo session, the party’s spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said President Emmerson Mnangagwa agreed that Mohadi can continue as the party’s second secretary despite his resignation from his government job.

“The President, Emmerson Mnangagwa briefed us that former Vice President Kembo Mohadi had resigned from government but will remain as the second secretary of the party and the decision was unanimously agreed by the Politburo,” Khaya Moyo said.

Mohadi was also present at the Politburo meeting yesterday.

Moyo also said that President Mnangagwa was the appointing authority of his vice presidents and no one in the party was going to push him into appointing Mohadi’s successor in government.

“The President is the appointing authority in the party and government and we are not going to ask him to name the successor as he shall do it as his own time, and that issue was not discussed,” Khaya Moyo said.

Mohadi was appointed Zanu PF’s second secretary and VP alongside Constantino Chiwenga in November 2017 following the resignation of then President Robert Mugabe.

Mohadi has denied the allegations and audios on social media that have gone viral arguing it was cloning and needed time away from the government office to clear his name and image.

Meanwhile, Zanu PF has appointed former Cabinet minister Sydney Sekeramayi as the chairman of the newly created ZANU-PF Council of Elders mandated to advise the party on political matters.

Other members of the Council of Elders are Edna Madzongwe, Josiah Hungwe, Richard Ndlovu and Angeline Masuku.

The Council of Elders will be working with the first secretary of the party President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputies Kembo Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga.

The elders will also work closely with the party’s secretary for administration, Obert Mpofu and secretary for legal affairs, Paul Mangwana, according to Moyo.

“The party has set up the Council of Elders chaired by Comrade Sekeramayi and he will be working with secretary of administration of the party as secretariat and the secretary of the legal affairs will be drafting out their terms of reference and it was also endorsed by the Politburo,” Khaya Moyo said.
