Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) says its members have begun all the necessary procedures to import maize from the SADC region and the Black Sea.
GMAZ chairman, Tafadzwa Musarara, confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.
“GMAZ has now begun all the requisite processes to import maize both from the Southern African region and the Black Sea,” Musarara said.
He said the millers also applauded the latest joint policy pronouncement by the Minister of Agriculture and Finance on the 2023/ 4 grain marketing arrangements and among others , the full resumption of maize imports by the millers.
“We applaud government for its proactiveness by committing to climate proof farming methods, re-introducing pre-planting pricing and allowing the full resumption of maize imports so that millers shore up their stocks considering the worsening effects of global warming on agriculture and the deteriorating geo-politics.
“The anticipated El Nino induced drought that now confronts us has the potency to impact negatively on the country’s grain yield,” Musarara said.
The Pfumvudza/Intwasa concept was adopted by the government during the 2020–2021 growing season as a part of adaptation and mitigation measures to lessen the effects of climate change.
