MDC Alliance divided over ConCourt ruling

Divisions have rocked MDC Alliance with the formation issuing out contradicting statements on the outcome of the Constitutional Court ruling which dismissed the party’s election petition.
The party president Nelson Chamisa told journalists in the capital on Saturday morning that while they respect the courts, the party was not accepting the outcome, contradicting an earlier statement by the director of communications Luke Tamborinyoka who had said the party respect and accepts the outcome of the ruling.
In the statement by Tamborinyoka, the party said they believe in the rule of law and respect the verdict of the court.
“As a party and as an Alliance, we believe in the rule of law and we respect the verdict of the courts…our unstinting belief in the rule of law means we shall not only respect the verdict of the Bench but we shall also doggedly pursue all constitutionally permissible avenues to ensure that the sovereign will of the people is protected and guaranteed,” reads the statement.
Chamisa however dismissed the statement saying his statement today was the official position of the party and would investigate as to who authorised the earlier statement.
“Yes I have seen the statement but this is the position of the party that we have just said. We respect the courts but we are not accepting their ruling. We will investigate on who gave the authority to have the statement issued. What we have said here is the position of the party,” he said.
Tamborinyoka confirmed he was the one who issued the statement but referred all questions to Chamisa’s spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda.
“I am the one who issued that statement yes but can you talk to the president’s spokesperson he might be in a position to comment on the matter,” he said.
