The installation of the 3,5 kilometer water pipeline in Chiwenga area of Muzarabani by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has extended a lifeline to the community as villagers now have access to safe water.

The community used to share the same sources of water with both domestic and wild animals, making their life considerably challenging.

Last week, ZRCS commissioned the pipeline that will see several households, the local clinic and a local school benefiting from the project.

Minister of state for Mashonaland Central, Monica Mavhunga, hailed the organisation for the zeal to have better lives for people.

“We have been experiencing serious problems here in Chiwenga and the situation made life difficult for expecting mothers as they could not get water. However the commissioning of this project by the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is a great move and, as Government, we want to applaud them for that,” she said.

She said as government they will be working with ZRCS in fostering several community developments.

“I would like to urge the community to desist from vandalising the project but to make use of it. You have seen it here that the humanitarian organisation has shown its commitment to complimenting the government in improving the livelihoods of people here in Muzarabani,” she said.

ZRCS secretary general Mr Maxwell Phiri said as an organisation they were working on alleviating disasters in communities.

“We always work to alleviate disasters in communities. Now my plea to the minister is to make her door open to us as Red Cross. The minister has asked us also to put our hand at Chiwenga School, as ZRCS we will construct a classroom block at the school,” he said.

Meanwhile the organisation also commissioned a footbridge in Chadereka they worked with engineers from the Zimbabwe National Army.

“This is a project we asked the community to work with the ZNA and I am glad that today we hand over to them. It now belongs to the community,” said Mr Phiri.
