A new golf tournament, the Zimbabwe Inter  City Golf Championship , is set to tee off  in Gweru Golf Club next month.

The tournament  director, Ephraim Mashingaidze, confirmed the development saying it was a deliberate, strategic move to promote the sport of golf amongst the administration structures of all the cities and towns  in Zimbabwe.

“All cities and towns will be eligible to send in their golf representatives to compete amongst other golfers. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday 17 September at Gweru Golf Club,” Mashingaidze said.

He added: “As you are aware most golf courses in Zimbabwe belong to city councils  or town councils.

“We  are taking the sport of golf to their doorsteps to ensure that we encourage them to increase their participation in the sport of golf.

“We  appreciate that we already have a good number of local authorities officials in Zimbabwe which have active golfers, he said.

He said the new tournament has been well received by the local authorities.

“We know there are strong teams of soccer, volleyball, basketball etc which represent cities or towns in top flight leagues of their sport codes. Thus, the Zimbabwe Inter-City Golf Championship will be a sharp tool for golf development in the country.

“ We are glad to advise that the concept of this new tournament has been well received by the cities and towns who already have  golfers in their stables to come participate in this grand golf ensemble.

“The bragging rights challenges have already escalated  with the host city of Gweru promising to lift the trophy next month,” he said.
