Harare demolishes houses to build $1,4m stadium

Since 2015, the Harare City Council has demolished close to 500 houses in the High Glen area opposite the Budiriro high-density suburb to build a soccer stadium. Hundreds of
residents have been left homeless, but the City Council insists that the structures were illegal. More than $1.4m has been set aside for the construction of a small soccer stadium on the land where dozens of people were duped by land barons to build their homes. “The area where the stadium will be constructed is opposite High Glen where illegal houses were  demolished,” a Council official told Business Times. Council spokesperson Michael Chideme said the stadium was meant to decentralise services and would see people around the Budiriro area coming to watch football matches, musical galas, and other sporting activities.
