Hailstorm destroys 15 homes in Chivi

A hailstorm that hit Chivi district in Masvingo Province in the past few days has left a trail of destruction amid revelations that more than 15 homes in Chief Madyangove jurisdiction were destroyed, leaving families homeless.
“I can confirm that we had houses and crops destroyed by the hailstorm that swept across this Southern part of the country in Ward 12 a couple of days ago,” Ward 12 councillor Tedfed Tizai said.
He added: “Most of the affected villages are those found in Mazorodze village. Crops were destroyed. What is surprising us is that this hailstorm pounced on Mazorodze village only exempting the neighbouring Madziva, Fichani and Kumbire villages.
“We are making frantic efforts to make sure that the affected villagers get help from the government and well-wishers. I am collating figures for the total number of affected families.”
One of the affected villagers, Nelson Mahaso, pleaded “with whoever is ready to intervene and help us”.
This is a special appeal as we have nowhere to stay. My home was extensively damaged. Asbestos sheets were completely destroyed leaving most of our houses with no roof,” Mahaso said.
Contacted for a comment, Chivi district development coordinator, Innocent Matingwina confirmed the disaster saying he has made a report to the responsible authorities which is the local government.
“I can confirm that about 15 households have been left homeless in Chief Madyangove’s area. I have also asked our district partners to help us with aid as some of the people no longer have food and shelter. There is a need for tents. We have also engaged our partners such as Red Cross, Jairos Jiri, Caritas and Care for help,” Matingwina said.
