At least 250 000 litres of  diesel have been availed to transporters to distribute inputs to farmers across the country, a Cabinet minister said.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development minister, Anxious Masuka said  the latest development came after some transporters  had refused to ferry the inputs.

“Government has taken the stance that this Presidential Input Scheme be available to all 2.3m households—1.8m rural households and the balance peri-urban and in that, Government is going to provide transport from GMB depots to the respective wards. There are challenges in some wards and these are an exception,” Masuka told Parliament last week.

“(Now), we were given 250 000 litres of diesel to avail to transporters so that they can move their inputs expeditiously.”

He said some transporters in Gokwe ,Zvimba and Murehwa,  were unwilling to engage GMB to ferry the inputs. Masuka said the government wanted all inputs to be distributed by GMB,.

Meanwhile, the Agritex Provincial Officer for Matabeleland South, Innocent Nyathi said distribution of inputs in the province was going on well.

“We are also doing the Pfumvudza /Intwasa inputs distributing these inputs. We are providing transport to  the nearest reach so I think we are on the right track.”he said.

Nyathi said the government was engaging with other stakeholders to transport the Pfumvudza /Intwasa inputs.

“We are saying the rains have started. Transporters were delaying us. I think now they are going to ferry the inputs.

“And I also believe we are also going to engage the army to transport inputs to farmers so very shortly we will be done in terms of transporting them so that they get inputs at the right time and at the right place,” he said.
