HARARE – MDC Alliance’s Glen Norah councilor, Herbert Gomba, has been duly elected as Harare’s new mayor after councilors were sworn in earlier today at Town Hall.

Gomba was elected unopposed, along with Enock Mupamaonde who will serve as his deputy.

The swearing in ceremony was conducted by the acting Town clerk Engineer Abraham Chisango and acting chamber secretary Charles Kandemire.

MDC Alliance has 45 councillors while Martin Matinyanya is ZANU PF’s sole councilor.

Gomba, who will lead the council for the next five years, said he is working on a programme to transform the capital city.

The mayorship post has been vacant since Bernard Manyenyeni’s term came to an end, with new councilors elected at the July 30 harmonised polls.

“I have a transformation agenda for the city which I am going to be implementing with my councilors, this includes the rehabilitation of roads. We want to put spaghetti roads, and make service delivery a priority for the citizens of Harare in the next five years,” Gomba said.

“We hope that government is also going to help us as councilors to bring these services to our residents.”
