From “stone thrower” to city father

MOSES MATENGA

He has been arrested more than 14 times for leading opposition demonstrations in Harare and fiercely confronting former President Robert Mugabe’s administration.

Ten of the 14 times, he was arrested over MDC-T protests and the remaining four, for leading the Tajamuka and civic society protests.

His images went viral on social media platforms in 2016 when social movements piled pressure on Mugabe.

It is difficult to miss that 34 year-old Denford Ngadziore, is now a City of Harare councilor.

Ngadziore was a key figure in most MDC –T protests since 2001 where he would confront police officers without fear.

He lost in his bid to represent ward 16 in 2013 but never lost hope.

His ward covers low density areas including Malbereign, Ashdown Park, Madokero St Andrews Park, Bloomingdale, Maranatha, Greencroft, Sunridge, Santosa, Linana Park among others and he promised he will deliver the needs of the people.

“In as much as I am now a city father, I still have a position in the party which is a clear mandate of leading the youths and I will continue leading. My main focus is on service delivery. We want to see change in our lifetime. We cannot blame central government for everything, there are some things we can do.

We will try to reach out to central government but if that fails, we will go back to the people… those who sent us to council,” he said.

“In terms of leading demonstrations… of course (we will continue but we want to focus on bettering the lives of our people.”

Nicknamed Madhuku because of his striking resemblance to National Constitutional Assembly leader, Lovemore Madhuku, Ngadziore said he was used to be on the radar of state agents and police.

He said he was going to set an example in council together with other youthful leaders to make sure the country regains faith in the leadership of young people.

“We need young people in Parliament and council. We need young people as leaders and that will start with us,” said the MDC Alliance national council member and Harare provincial youth assembly secretary.
