Foreign Affairs minister Shava in Malawi for Sadc meet

Foreign Affairs and International Trade minister Frederick Shava is in Malawi  for a two-day Sadc Council of Ministers meeting which began Friday to reconsider recommendations of the Select committee on the appointment of the next Executive Secretary for the bloc.

Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax’s tenure as the 6th Executive Secretary ends this month. The Tanzanian national took over the reins in 2013, becoming the bloc’s first female Executive Secretary.

The meeting will also get an update on regional economic integration, particularly in the status in the Implementation of the Sadc Industrialisation roadmap, the Ministry’s spokesperson Constance Chemwayi said in a statement.

It will also discuss the security situation in the region and priority interventions under the theme of the 41st Sadc Summit to held from August 17 to 18 in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.

The Ministers meeting was preceded by the Standing Committee os senior officials meeting held on August 9 to 11 and Finance Ministers meeting on August 10.

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera will take over the chairmanship of the bloc from his Mozambican counterpart Felipe Nyusi.
