The Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Pvt) Ltd is seeking a nod to exhume human remains from a grave in the Manhize area in Chirumhanzu district to pave the way for the US$1bn project.

In a notice seeking authority to exhume the remains, the company said the exhumation of the remains in a grave will immediately pave the way for the beginning of the project.

Under the Cemeteries Act, authority should be sought to exhume remains for any project.

“Notice is hereby given that Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Pvt) Ltd is proposing to undertake the removal of human remains from one grave in Dinson Iron and Steel Company plant area in Manhize in Chirumhanzu area district to pave way for the development of an Iron and Steel plant,” the notice reads.

The company called on any objections on the exhumation saying: “Any person claiming to have any objections to the proposed removal of the human remains is hereby required to lodge the same in writing with the Public Relations Manager of the Chirumhanzu District Development Coordinator.”

Manhize project is almost complete and reports show that it will be equipped with a 1.5km-by-600-metre carbon and steel plant, an iron ore mine, and a ferrochrome plant, the project will have the capacity of 1.2m tonnes a year and about 500 people are set to benefit through employment.

Authorities say the project will be Africa’s largest integrated steel plant and is anticipated to start production soon.
