Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has poured cold water on speculation that he was aiming to challenge President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the ongoing Zanu PF congress in Harare and declared the party leader as the sole Presidential candidate in the next elections due in July 2023.

Zanu PF is holding its congress where the party is expected to elect its leadership.

The congress came amid speculation of potential fireworks stoked by reports suggesting Chiwenga would challenge for the ruling party leadership.

However, all the hullabaloo was silenced after the former military strongman declared that Zanu PF was rallying behind Mnangagwa to retain the top post come 2023.

“While this congress is supposed to be elective, the party structures have already clearly and thunderously endorsed Cde (Emmerson) Mnangagwa as the President and first Secretary as sole candidate in the 2023 national elections. People have thus spoken. Let their will be obeyed,” Chiwenga declared at the ongoing congress.

Mnangagwa is now set to face off against his biggest rival, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa in the next elections after getting thumbs up from the party.
