Police have arrested 1203 suspects across the country including drug lords who are trading in illicit substances.
However, there have been calls for police to target the elites behind the trading and supply of drugs in the country and are suspected to be politically-connected.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Business Times yesterday that police remain alert to deal with those involved in drug sales and abuse saying the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
“So far we have arrested 1 023 people throughout the county, under the current drug and substance abuse operation which is targeting the peddlers, drug lords and those who are engaging in drug trafficking,” Nyathi said.
“We are happy with the cooperation which we are getting from the public but we still appeal for more information and for the public to report at any nearest police station on people involved in drug peddling which has affected the youths, adults, and even spread to schools, colleges and universities.”
Recently, eight students from Dominican Convent school in Harare were suspended after they were exposed for substance abuse.
Three students in Zvishavane in the Midlands province were arrested this week after they were caught smoking marijuana.
A serving police officer was arrested in Sunningdale this week while dealing in drugs.
